Understanding How Pregnancy Affects the Skin

Pregnancy isn’t just a journey for your body – your skin is in for a transformation too!

Understanding How Pregnancy Affects the Skin

Pregnancy is a time of profound change, not only for the body but for the skin too. Hormonal shifts, increased blood flow, and the stretching of the skin to accommodate a growing baby can all lead to a variety of skin changes and challenges. While some women enjoy a glowing complexion during pregnancy, others may experience issues such as acne, hyperpigmentation, or sensitivity. This blog post explores the common skin changes during pregnancy and offers tips on how to care for your skin during this unique time.

The Pregnancy Glow: What's Behind It?

Many women experience what is commonly referred to as the "pregnancy glow." This radiant complexion is often attributed to increased blood circulation, which boosts the skin's natural radiance, and the higher levels of hormones, which can make the skin appear fuller and more luminous. However, this glow is not universal, and some women may find their skin behaves quite differently.

Common Skin Changes During Pregnancy

Hyperpigmentation and Melasma

One of the most noticeable skin changes that can occur during pregnancy is the development of dark patches on the face, referred to as melasma or "the mask of pregnancy”. Melasma is caused by an increase in melanin production due to hormonal fluctuations. These dark spots can appear on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and upper lip. They often appear like dark “shadows” to the skin rather than distinct freckles.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for melasma with hormonal fluctuations, heat and sun exposure exacerbating the condition. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, wearing hats, and seeking shade can help protect your skin and prevent dark spots from becoming more pronounced. Post pregnancy, treatments and clinical skincare can reduce the appearance of these pigmentation concerns, such as retinoids, tyrosinase inhibitors and lasers such as Q-Switch (avoid heat-based treatments!).

Acne and Breakouts

Hormonal changes can also lead to an increase in oil production, which may cause breakouts or aggravate existing acne. Pregnant women may experience acne on their face, back, or chest, even if they haven't had issues with acne before.

Although we are slightly limited with certain clinical treatments and skincare ingredients, treating acne during pregnancy is still possible. It is best to consult with your treating clinician to determine safe treatments and skincare products to use during pregnancy.

Sensitive Skin

During pregnancy, the skin can become more sensitive to irritants, making it more reactive to products or environmental factors that previously didn’t cause any issues. This heightened sensitivity can result in rashes, redness, or a feeling of tightness and discomfort.

Given the potential for increased sensitivity, it's essential to use gentle, hydrating, and non-irritating skincare products. Opt for fragrance-free products that work on nourishing the skin and locking in moisture.

Skin Tags

Small, soft growths known as skin tags may appear during pregnancy, particularly in areas where the skin rubs against clothing or other skin, such as the neck, underarms, or breasts. These are generally harmless and can be easily removed if desired.

Once your baby has arrived, these skin tags can be easily removed with the use of diathermy or cryotherapy. They sometimes even fall off on their own!

Consult a Professional

If you're experiencing significant skin issues during pregnancy, it may be helpful to consult with a professional to assess the skin and provide advice. Although limited, there are still safe and effective treatments available during pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a time of transformation, and the skin reflects many of the changes happening within the body. While some of these changes may be unwelcome, others, like the pregnancy glow, can be a positive aspect of this life stage. Understanding what’s happening to your skin and taking steps to care for it can help you navigate these changes with confidence. Whether it’s embracing new skincare routines or seeking advice from professionals, prioritizing skin health during pregnancy is a great way to support overall well-being.
